As written in past posts, we choose to enter only a few prestigious trade tastings and wine competitions a year - to understand where we stand in the wine world. We invest heart and finances in personable, professional and educational tastings at our Quinta and have a terrific Team Tedo of tour guides - they are integral “voices” for our estate. We also support our importers - present at their trade tastings and with support material. We are committed to making the best Portos, Douro DOC wines and Olive Oil possible, being small allows for control! While a Douro Valley trend today pushes for dry, perhaps lighter Douro DOC wines, and some wineries experiment with mono-varietals and other non-indigenous grapes, we hold true to tradition, producing quality Portos, a fortified wine ONLY made in Douro Valley - and blended red wines - that express the complexity and balance of using over 20 different varietals.
I proudly present you recent Quinta do Tedo accolades:
Vintage 2017 and Savedra Vintage 2017: 94 – 96 points by Mark Squire, a highly respected Douro Valley wine critique, and of Wine Advocate fame. “This is a brillant Port, the best I’ve ever seen from Tedo. Its closest competitor might be its sibling…the Savedra. This is also one of best value points in the vintage, an under-the-radar sleeper that comes in at a great price. Bargain hunters take note.”
He refers to 2017 as “the Freak Vintage…a big-time year that does everything well—old-school power, concentration, freshness, lifted fruit and vivid flavors. The only vintage in the last decade that competes with it is 2011”. 2017 was a challenge – a dry spell from May until harvest and a 50% seasonal normal rainfall could have been disastrous in a quality vintage for many, but the results were extremely impressive.
The Vintage 2017 Portos will be released on the market 1 September.
Decanter’s World Wine Awards presented Quinta do Tedo with silver medals for Ruby and Finest Reserve Portos. Descriptions include:
Ruby: “The palate is laden with lovely cassis, rich raisins before a chalky finish.”
Finest Reserve: “Supple, pleasing fruit to taste, with real juiciness and roasted dark fruits.”
And, last but not least, our Vintage 2003 was recently awarded a Gold medal at the Concurso de Vinhos do Douro 2019 in “Douro Wine City” Regua, by the Confraria dos Vinhos do Douro,.
For your enjoyment, dear reader - open a bottle of each!
