Harvest started very early in late August after a long, hot summer. Mother Nature’s temperatures at times were challenging but Tedo’s microclimates are hot during the day with a cool evening breeze that slows grape maturation. We harvested for a solid week and then waited a solid week as several parcels, had stopped ripening due to the heat – photosynthesis stops when it is so hot. Our last day of harvest was 12 September. With fewer grapes to harvest, due to replanted parcels from last year, the grapes, already heat and drought-resistant varieties, came in healthy and beautiful. Foot treading was back in full swing, thank goodness.
Purple Feet = Promising Port!
2 Quinta do Tedo Programs for you to reserve in 2023 - our annual Harvest Experience was back by popular demand. Spend a half day together as a group (minimum 8 persons) with our vineyard and cellar crew and learn hands-on how our Port and wines are made. From picking grapes in the morning with our vineyard team and afternoon foot treading in our lagares, to traditional harvest songs with our cellar team to the grand finalé of enjoying a fine old vintage together at the end of the program, this is a unique experience. Offered in early September 2023 – contact me now if you are interested via info@quintadotedo.com – we do not have a specific day(s) yet and I will update you end of first week August 2023.
Thank you to all Harvest Experience Team! The enthusiasm was contagious in your participation and so many laughs and smiles made for a memorable experience. Everyone likes to be part of something and what is better than sharing a slice of harvest life at Tedo!
Our Winemaker for a Day program debuted this year with great success, and is offered throughout the year (minimum 8 persons). A half day together as a group starts with learning hands-on in the vineyard – to understand grapevine identification, Quinta do Tedo’s viticultural ethos and our grape variety selection criteria. A tour and tasting of what is currently in our barrels or tanks follows and an afternoon course in Tawny blending ends with the grand finalé - craft your very own Tawny – and take home the bottle!
Thank you to our pilot program team - I found that the interest is there to continue. In today’s world we search for learning experiences and to be part of a group sharing similar focuses is fun, interactive and stimulating! Plus, the proof is in the pudding!
Both programs include:
a typical vineyard team snack of soup and bacalhau fritters aka pataniscas,
a tour and tasting
a family-style lunch with our award-winning Rosé, Red wines and Ports
a Quinta do Tedo t-shirt or a baseball cap
a slice of Tedo life from the heart!
We hope to have you join us in 2023!
